Core Technology

Silicon Photonics FMCW Technology
LuminWave’s self-developed silicon photonics FMCW detection chip employs local oscillator light to coherently amplify the emitted optical signal. The received signal can be amplified by a factor of 100,000, significantly enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) compared to other solutions. This improvement not only boosts the LiDAR’s ranging capability but also reduces the required optical power.
The unique Doppler effect of FMCW allows for direct velocity measurement and virtually eliminates interference from ambient light and other LiDAR systems, addressing the challenges of outdoor and multi-LiDAR applications.
By leveraging emerging silicon photonics technology, LuminWave integrates multiple photonic systems onto a multi-channel FMCW chip, substantially reducing the size and cost of LiDAR to meet the demands of automotive and other LiDAR applications.

Silicon Photonics Solid-State Scanning
LuminWave employs a silicon photonics chip solution with on-chip solid-state scanning. Leveraging the highly integrated optoelectronic capabilities and scalable manufacturing advantages of the silicon semiconductor ecosystem, we have developed a silicon photonics chip that integrates an optical antenna array and control unit.
This enables chip-level solid-state scanning, meeting the automotive industry’s requirements for reliability and scalable mass production of automotive-grade LiDAR.
• High Integration
• High-Precision Beam Control
• Software-Defined Region of Interest (ROI)

LuminScan™
By integrating silicon-based 2.5D optoelectronic integration and our proprietary silicon photonics technology, LuminWave has developed the high-cost-performance chip-level beam control platform, LuminScan™.
This platform enables various beam scanning modes and light source power control schemes, making it possible to implement software-defined dynamic scanning of regions of interest (ROI) and non-uniform resolution distribution.
Thanks to its high reliability and scalability for mass production, this technology has been successfully applied to LuminWave’s LiDAR products, including the D-series.

• 5D Optoelectronic Integration
• Scalability
Wafer-Level Optics
LuminWave’s chip development team collaborates with world-class research institutions to bring wafer-level optics (WLO) technologies, such as meta-surface optical structure design, from the laboratory to the commercial market.
WLO offers a simpler, more compact, and more flexible solution compared to traditional complex multi-lens optical systems.
By integrating WLO with silicon photonics technology, we deliver smaller form factor, higher-performance LiDAR products.
• Meta-surface Structure Design
• Scalable Manufacturing Process

LuminScan™
LuminWave’s team applies AI algorithms to antenna array design and signal processing for high-performance photonic devices.
In addition to AI algorithms, LuminWave has also developed signal processing algorithms based on mathematical models, which are used to handle the relatively complex raw data from LiDAR.
These algorithms can be embedded in the processors of our LiDAR products or in the domain controllers of our customers, and they support over-the-air (OTA) updates.
